Why You Should Invest In An Extended Warranty

Accidents happen, so it’s best to make sure that you’ve invested in the proper coverage. When deciding on the type of asphalt shingles for your roof, home owners are presented with many different options from roof shingle manufacturers, including the type of roof warranty that can be purchased. There are actually three different types of warranties available; Workmanship Warranties, Manufacturer’s Extended Warranties, and Manufacturer’s Standard Warranties.

Workmanship Warranties are sometimes called Services Warranties, and are issued by the roof contractor who is doing the roof installation. The workmanship warranty protects a home owner against any defect of workmanship on the roof installation.

Manufacturer’s Extended Warranties are sometimes referred to as Manufacturer’s System Warranties, and are issued by the roofing manufacturer in conjunction with authorized roofing contractors who have gone through the manufacturer’s certification process to prove their competency and workmanship. Manufacturer’s Extended Warranties typically cover the entire roof system, including materials, removal, disposal and labour for reinstallation of the roof shingles. It is worth nothing that not all shingles made by the manufacturer are eligible for extended warranties, and would only be eligible if the roofing contractor meets the manufacturer’s installation requirements. This warranty acts as a safeguard against expensive, unforeseen repairs that no one ever wants to deal with.

Manufacturer’s Standard Warranties are sometimes called Material or Product Warranties, and are issued by the roof shingle manufacturer. This is a limited warranty that is typically included in the purchase of roof shingles, and covers defects in materials only due to manufacturing defects or the shingles breaking down or failing before they should. This warranty does not include the cost of labour or disposal, and is typically prorated based on the life of the roof. That’s one of the many reasons we use IKO shingles, they provide a Limited Warranty for moments like these when we do find a manufacturer’s defect:

IKO provides a Limited Warranty to the original Owner of its Shingle products. The coverage provided by this Limited Warranty is subject to terms and conditions. This Limited Warranty is intended to provide coverage only to the Owner and only for a manufacturing defect that results in leaks. The Limited Warranty starts on the day that the original installation of the Shingles on the roof is completed, and coverage is limited to the length of time listed in the Information Tables for the specific Shingles product installed on the Owner’s roof (the “Warranty Period”). The Limited Warranty provides the Owner specific legal rights, but the Owner may also have other legal rights. Those rights will vary from state to state or province to province.

Most manufacturer’s standard warranties are pro-rated. This means that in the event there is a manufacturer’s defect in the roof shingles, the homeowner will receive replacement shingles proportional to the amount of time remaining on the warranty period.
